The 2002 Ford Explorer XLT is a relatively easy vehicle to maintain, but is more recommended to those capable of vehicle maintenance. Changing the engine air filter with reliability is no problem, as you only have to disengage a few fasteners for access to the filter. The engine coolant reservoir is easily visible in the engine bay. This will allow you to check and replenish the fluid level regularly. Checking the oil level is easy to do, as the dipstick is easily accessible in the engine bay.

Some things are problematic on the 2002 Ford Explorer XLT. You will have to lower the tire from under the vehicle for access to it. The lowering mechanism can grow rusted to the vehicle. You will have to completely remove the headlight housing for access to the bulb. This will require you to remove a few fasteners. Changing the center brake light will also require you to use a few tools to remove the bulb housing for access.
